What is French girl style anyway?

Is French Style attainable?

As a French woman, I am kind of expected to know a lot more than I probably do about all things fashion and style. I don’t really live and breathe fashion but what I have probably took with me to Australia is that I value simplicity above anything, I do not overthink any look and I must absolutely be comfortable in anything I wear.

What really is French Style?

French style is actually easier to attain than you might think. I like to think of it as effortless, classic, definitely cool but not arrogant. It’s about finding the equilibre between looking like I made an effort but also looking quite casual at the same time.

I personally do not feel comfortable wearing bold shades and over the top pieces.  I prefer good quality items that work well together and find myself mixing fabric and textures.

So how do you dress like a French woman?

Here are my “How do you look so French?” tips.

  1. Buy less but better. It would be so easy to be tempted all the time but unless you have endless funds and an enormous amount of space, buy less but choose versatile items, or go rummage your favourite op shops. You would not believe the treasures I have found there!
  2. Mix casual items with something a little dressier. I adore putting a shirt on. It always make me feel I have made an effort. I wear shirts with relaxed pants or skirts and mostly sneakers.
  3. Look at the composition of each item you buy. I prefer natural fibres such as cotton, silk, wool and linen, or blends.
  4. By all mean, have fun with colours but have a selection of basic ones such as navy, black, all shades of whites and beige.
  5. Jeans go with everything by the way. Have a couple of pair of jeans perfectly cut and fitted for your body that will make you feel fantastic.
  6. You will very rarely see a French woman over-accessorized!
  7. Simplicity is key, that’s kind of a recap, isn’t it?
  8. Be inspired by what you see but do not copy. There are so many choices and inspiration out there but not every style works on everyone. Try to find your own personal one. Understand what you really like, what you don’t and what flatters your body shape.
