Learning French on line..does it work? You bet....

What a title!

Now that I have said it, there is no turning back.

Let's have a closer look at why you want to get back into French, shall we?

Picture yourself planning your next trip, speaking with your local boulanger, asking about the origin of the produce at the local market, enjoying an aperitif with your delightful neighbours...that's what we all want when we learn another language. Very rarely...ermm...actually never, do I hear : "ohhh, I'm learning French because I really want to understand the reasons why avoir is so irregular".

No, what we want is connection, we want to understand and be part of conversations, we want to get the jokes, the nuances and feel culturally supercharged..hey..maybe we want to feel we could live there and be ok, maybe we could almost be French.

I know because that was exactly me when I started learning English. I just wanted to be able to talk to Madonna, the guys from Depeche Mode and Lloyd Cole if I ever met them. That's true, when I first studied English, I used to spend hours reading lyrics of songs, try to understand what they meant, how I could use them in my own essays...then when I moved to London, I was pretty crushed to realise than my English wasn't as good as I thought. I could read and write quite well, but my conversation skills were non existant. It is then that it hit me : I had never seen a movie that hadn't been dubbed in French, I had never talked to real life English speaking people before. I was 21 and had been learning English for 10 years! It was a disaster!

Now, that I am teaching French to foreigners, I understand that grammar and tenses are important, but are just one aspect of the language, you need to hear it, speak it, read it, write it in all its form to get the full experience and see progress.

That is the idea behind the Membership. I will not ask you to burn all your books, no...but I will ask you to trust me and believe that watching a film, listening to music, thinking in French while you brush your teeth and write your daily to do list will help you more than verbs drilling.

I will give you enough 'work' and 'ideas' to implement by yourself in your own time at your own pace that it won't even feel that you are doing work.

All I am asking is that you want to get back into French and that you believe you can do it, that you are ok feeling a little out of your comfort zone and that you try things.

If you answer OUiiiii to these, the membership is for you.

Dive into it and over the weeks, feel your listening skills sharpen, your accent and fluency develop, understand how to focus on the essential part of any piece of writing, learn a few hacks and ready made sentences that you can use as template and immerse yourself into all aspects of French culture.

So, time to ditch the grammar books and dive into a membership that offers you all that !!

Pinky promise.

ps:  just so you know, I did meet Lloyd Cole, and I did speak to him...terribly awkwardly..gosh.

A bientôt,

Alexandra
